Your first consultation: where answers begin

Many people who come to MiFertility have already had basic tests done by their GP. That’s a great start and we’ll build on it thoughtfully. Your first visit to MiFertility includes a one-hour consultation with Dr Bhanu Deval, who will:

  • Take a detailed medical and fertility history
  • Perform a high-resolution transvaginal in-clinic ultrasound with 3D and Doppler imaging
  • Begin discussing potential causes of infertility based on real-time findings
  • Recommend tailored blood tests or further investigations, if needed
I aim to provide clarity and information from your first consultation, wherever possible.

Tests we may recommend after your consultation

Depending on what we learn in your initial appointment and scan, we may recommend further tests to get a complete picture of your fertility.

Blood tests for women

  • AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone): Assesses your ovarian reserve. It can be affected by ovarian cysts, so this is cross-checked with your ultrasound’s Antral Follicle Count (AFC), which Dr Deval personally assesses.
  • FSH, LH, oestradiol and androgens: Particularly helpful if PCOS is suspected.
  • Thyroid function and prolactin: To check for hormonal imbalances.
  • Fasting insulin and glucose: Especially relevant for women with PCOS or irregular cycles.
  • Autoimmune screen: Helps detect conditions that may impact fertility or increase miscarriage risk.
  • Infection screening: For common reproductive tract infections.
  • Karyotyping: A type of genetic test that looks at the number and structure of chromosomes. It can help identify conditions like a balanced translocation, which may contribute to recurrent miscarriage or unsuccessful IVF cycles.
  • Genetic carrier screening:
    • Medicare-funded for three common conditions in Australia: Cystic Fibrosis, Fragile X and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
    • Comprehensive carrier screening is also available (not Medicare-covered) to test for hundreds of recessive conditions.

Tests for male partners

  • Semen analysis is used to assess sperm parameters such as count, motility and morphology.
  • Sperm DNA fragmentation test (if required): Checks for sperm DNA quality, which can affect fertilisation and embryo development.
  • Karyotyping: A genetic test that checks for chromosomal abnormalities, such as a balanced translocation, which can affect sperm quality or embryo development. Often recommended when there’s a history of multiple IVF failures or miscarriage.

Bringing together your results and scan findings

Once your blood test results are back, Dr Deval will bring everything together (hormone levels, scan findings, your history) to personalise your treatment plan.

Because he performs your scan himself and is familiar with your full clinical picture, he can correlate:

  • Low or high AMH with antral follicle count (AFC)
  • Hormone profile with signs of PCOS
  • Recurrent miscarriage with structural or genetic findings
  • Endometrial or uterine issues that may affect implantation

This means you’ll receive a plan that reflects your body, not just standard protocol.

You’re welcome to come to MiFertility even if you’ve had investigations or treatment elsewhere.

Many people come for a second opinion, especially if they’ve had:

  • Prior IVF cycles that weren’t successful
  • Concerns raised about fibroids, cysts or endometriosis
  • Conflicting or unclear reports

Dr Deval will review all available information, repeat any needed assessments, and help you understand how these findings may (or may not) affect your fertility.
